What is lip gloss made of?

Lip gloss is made from a combination of ingredients that changes depending on the formula. Lip glosses are usually comprised of waxes like carnauba and beeswax, emollients such as coconut oil, Vitamin E and lanolin and, if tinted, colouring agents like traditional dyes or fruit extracts. Glittery glosses may utilise iron oxide or mica. Other lip glosses might incorporate mild anaesthetics like mint, menthol or camphor, anti-aging ingredients like hyaluronic acid and atelocollagen and antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E.

Clear lip gloss benefits

Clear lip gloss is arguably a must for its versatility and convenience. You can wear clear lip gloss on its own to enhance your natural lip colour and create the illusion of a plumper pout, or you can use it as a finishing touch on top of other lip products to add some shine.

When using a lip gloss over another lip product like a matte lipstick or lip liner, you can dab it in the centre and rub your lips together for a subtle sheen or you can coat the middle of the lips for a full and shiny lip look.

What is lip plumping lip gloss?

Lip plumping lip gloss aims to make the lips appear fuller and plumper. A shiny gloss itself usually creates the appearance of a juicier pout, but lip plumping lip glosses contain special ingredients to give the lips a further boost. Such ingredients include hyaluronic acid which is deeply moisturising and holds a thousand times its weight in water as well as mild irritants including capsicum, menthol, cinnamon, peppermint, ginger oil and camphor. When these mild irritants hit the surface of the lips, they cause blood to rush to the area, hence temporarily resulting in fuller lips.

You should exercise caution when using lip plumping products of any kind if you have sensitive skin or allergies, plus regular use of these products can dry out and irritate the lips as well as render the products less effective the more your skin becomes tolerant of the ingredients.

Which lip gloss is best?

The best lip gloss is the lip gloss that gives you the exact result you are after. There are clear lip glosses for a diamond-like shine that you can wear on their own or on top of other lip products and there are also highly pigmented glosses that provide both shine and extreme colour.

Other factors that may come into play when deciding on a lip gloss include how non-sticky it is, if it utilises a long-wearing formulation or if it includes hydrating ingredients such as Vitamin E and hyaluronic acid for added skin benefits.

Some of our top rated lip glosses include favourites from L'Oreal, wet n wild and Beauty Creations.

What is the difference between lip gloss and lip balm?

Lip gloss is primarily used for aesthetic purposes to add colour and/or shine to the lips, whereas the main forucs of lip balm is to calm, soothe and repair dry, chapped or irritated lips.

Lip gloss is more of a liquid and lip balm is usually more wax-like in texture and appearance. Some lip glosses may contain skin nourishing ingredients like Vitamin E or Aloe Vera that will help relieve chapped lips and some lip balms may give off a nice colour tint, but those are not their primary goals.

If you are looking for dedicated care, a lip balm is the better option. If you’re after colour and/or shine, choose a lip gloss.

Not necessarily. If you want your lipstick to stay true to colour it’s good to use a lip liner that is at least in the same shade family as your lipstick (i.e. a peach lip liner with a coral lipstick).

If you don’t want to splurge on lip liners but still want to use one to help with precision and definition, just purchase a lip liner that matches the natural colour of your lips.

Your ‘perfect red’ depends on your skin tone and undertones. If you have cool undertones, look for blue-based reds. If you’re more on the warmer side, opt for orange-based reds.

Keeping your lips moisturised and lining your lips with a lip liner will prevent lipsticks from feathering or bleeding. Blotting your lips will also help to stop feathering/bleeding.

Make sure you line and fill in your lips with a lip liner that matches the liquid lipstick you choose to use. Apply your liquid lipstick in thin layers and allow to dry before going in for a second layer if you choose.
