Oily skin is a natural part of life, but oh, oily skin, how you bother us so! The oils our skin naturally produces keep our skin nourished, healthy and hydrated. Some of us, however, have oil ducts that just love to party. The only thing is, we’re not partying with them. We’re trying to find a way to report them to the police and get their party shut down for good. Luckily Cosmetic Capital is dedicated to offering fantastic beauty products for oily skin, at affordable prices! If you’ve officially had enough of your excessively oily skin and are sick of the pimples you may be getting because of it, you can try out our selection of oil balancing face washes and acne treatments. From Primers to Foundations, we have a fantastic selection of beauty products that help to reduce oily skin and unblock pores.
What causes oily skin
Oily skin is something that affects everybody. Under each of your pores is a sebaceous gland that produces natural oils. These are called sebum. However, when the sebaceous glands produce too much oil, this causes oily skin. When your skin always seems to look shiny, or feels greasy even after cleaning, these are signs that you have an overproduction of oil.
Oily skin can be caused by various factors. Genetics, unfortunately, play a big role. Unfortunate because we all can’t escape our genetics. Age is also a significant factor, and as we age our skin loses collagen and the sebaceous glands slow down. This leads to dryer skin over time, fine lines and eventually wrinkles. The wrong moisturiser can also cause oily skin, so make sure you match your skin type and the season with the correct skincare products.
How to get rid of oily skin
Use these simple steps to get rid of oily skin!
- Perfect your daily cleansing routine
- Don’t give up on your moisturiser
- Introduce Salicylic Acid into your life
- Consider a clay mask
- Choose the correct foundation
What foundation to use with oily skin
Finding the right foundation for oily skin is difficult, but by no means impossible. The key element is finding a foundation that is won’t counteract the extra shine you naturally possess.
When looking for a foundation for your oily skin, mattifying foundations with longwearing benefits are your best friend. Oily skin often causes makeup to melt off by midday, so a longwearing foundation will give you the best chance of avoiding touch-ups every few hours.
You also want to find a foundation that won’t clog your pores, so look for non-comedogenic foundations as well.
Is moisturiser necessary for oily skin
People often confuse oily skin with natural hydration. In fact, it is very different. Oily skin is caused by excessive build up of sebum. This is not the same as skin hydration, which specifically relates to water being absorbed into the layers of the skin.
If your skin has a lot of oil, it does not mean it has a lot of water.
So make sure you still moisturise your skin, even if it is oily, to protect your skin from dehydration.
How to treat acne caused by oily skin
Acne and oily skin often go hand-in-hand. But with the right care, you can treat your acne regardless of your oily skin.
Here are five tips on treating acne for oily skin types.
1. Cleanse your face twice a day.
Cleansing your face regularly, once in the morning and once in the night, will help keep your oily skin in check. Use a foaming soap or cleanser instead of a lotion or cream-based cleanser. This will be more effective in clearing away excess oil.
Cleanse your face after you sweat, such as after the gym. You can use a cleansing wipe for this if you don’t have your foaming cleanser with you.
Be careful not to over-cleanse though as this can also be irritating for your skin.
2. Astringents are your best friend
Using an astringent, which is similar to a toner, will help remove excess oil from your skin. They will even temporarily tighten your pores.
Astringent’s are made for oily skin and are best used after cleansing, but before moisturising. Just apply the astringent to a cotton ball or pad and wipe over your face and neck.
3. Oil-free and water-based products are key
When buying new products, make sure they are oil-free or water-based. This will avoid adding more oil to your skin and are often weightless on the skin.
Products that are non-comedogenic are also useful, as they will stop your pores getting clogged, which often leads to breakouts.
4. Don’t scrub at your skin
Scrubbing your skin to remove excess oil won’t work. Be gentle and kind to your skin and you will avoid causing further irritation.
5. Remember to use acne treatments and exfoliating products
Acne-specific treatments and exfoliating products reduce excess oil, so you should be using these to treat your acne. They also have the double effect of making your pores look smaller, as large pores and oily skin are often prevalent together.
Salicylic Acid and Retinol are great at minimising large pores, while they also assist with oily skin.
