How to treat sensitive skin

Uneven skin, itchiness, extreme dryness, peeling, prone to breakouts, redness, stinging and burning? We understand. Sensitive skin can be the worst thing in the world. And if you have sensitive skin, it’s difficult to filter out all the existing skincare products that are gentle enough for your skin. Don’t worry, at Cosmetic Capital we consider every kind of skin type and have done the research for you!

When it comes to your personal skincare routine, you need to provide a little extra TLC and be selective when it comes to choosing products. Remember, ‘Calm, Soothing, Sensitive and Gentle’ are important words to go by. Don’t just rely on the pastel coloured packaging!

Here’s our list of skincare alternatives that are great for sensitive skin.

Oil balancing wipes

Balancing face wipes are a lifesaver when you have sensitive skin. Not only do they remove makeup, but they can effectively balm your skin and rid your complexion from dead skin cells and impurities that lead to infection.

If you’re especially prone to dry, reddening or itchy skin, we recommend using wet wipes that are alcohol free and include concentrated amounts of glycerin or chamomile. Glycerin restores moisture while Chamomile acts as a soothing disinfectant. These ingredients also don't leave a stinging sensation on the pores.

Gentle exfoliants and face cleansers

Any exfoliating face scrub with hard, gritty particles or large exfoliating beads are an absolute no-go. Instead, look for products like ‘cleansing water’, ‘uplifting facial foam’ and ‘face washes’.

It’s been proven that some revitalising facial scrubs can actually cause damage to sensitive skin and lead to infection, due to their rough deep cleansing formulas. If you enjoy a good face scrub every now and again, go for one with super-fine particles, infused with vitamins and try not massage too hard.

For cleansers and face washes, look for a product rich in plant enzymes and glycerin.

Products with little to no synthetic ingredients and/or fragrances

Avoid any products with artificial fragrances or strange sounding ingredients like parabens, phthalates, propylene, glycol, lanolin and formaldehyde.

These are common skin irritants often found in makeup or skincare products.

Instead, look for sensitive skin makeup or specific skincare for sensitive skin, which don't include these ingredients.

Organic and Natural Products

When you have sensitive skin, sometimes all it takes is simplifying your skincare routine and going all natural. That way, you know you’re guaranteed safe skincare products without the funky sounding ingredients.

Plus, they always smell great.

Natural and effective skincare ingredients include chamomile, green tea, oatmeal, licorice, shea butter, sea salt, seed and nut oil and honey.
